Striving for success in Islam

Updated: Jan 20, 2023

We live in a world where there is so much emphasis on being or becoming successful. We need to accomplish many things, own a house, have a high flying career or even a best selling book. These successes, however trivial or grand they appear, are so transient. They are limited to this worldly life and yet islam reminds us that the only thing we can take to the grave is our deeds.

Allah tells us in the Quran:

“Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only a deceiving thing.” (Quran 3:185)

So the real question becomes how do we live a successful life that will 𝙗𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙩 𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮? For truly the successful one is the one who submits to Allah wholeheartedly.

Success comes from having honest intentions and we must consistently renew our niyah for seeking Allah’s pleasure in all that we do. Even the mundane things like eating, sleeping, cooking or cleaning.

We are reminded with every call to prayer, come to success, hurry to success!

Therefore we must begin with our salah, establishing it at its prescribed times, completing it with focus, commitment and humility. Building our connection with Allah and honoring that connection five times a day. This is what will make us successful.

Let’s also consider other deeds that can aid us in this life to give us the very best in the next in sha Allah.

Learning a new Dua that becomes a part of your daily routine

Spending time in remembrance of Allah

To pray sunnah prayers

To give sadaqah every day (even if it’s simplya smile or a kind word)

Finally having the strength to leave a sin that is bogging you down…

In the Qur’an, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘢𝘴 [𝘔𝘶𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘯].

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

𝘚𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴

[𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘩 𝘈𝘭-𝘔𝘶’𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘯,23:1]

The root of this word is [falah] & the same root gives us the Arabic word for farmer i.e. [fallah].

A farmer may appear to lead a tough life, he struggles the entire year only to be paid once the crops have come.

This teaches us that we need to put in a lot of work and trust completely that the benefits will come In sha Allah!

𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜, because if the farmer were to quit before the whole process of cultivation is done, he will not bear the fruits in his hand. All his initial struggle, his time and energy will go to waste. The farmer may plant the seeds or tend to his livestock but ultimately he has no control over the outcome, this is in Allah’s hand alone. Does this mean he sits back and waits to see what happens? Not at all. He puts in his best efforts, he keeps striving and he has full trust in Allah.

“And my success cannot come from any source besides Allah. I have put my trust in Him.” (Quran 11:88)
